Lien Resolution

Also known as: lien negotiation, lien management, subrogation resolution

Lien resolution is the process of identifying, negotiating, and satisfying third-party claims against a plaintiff's settlement proceeds, including Medicare, Medicaid, private health insurer, and workers' compensation liens, before net funds are disbursed to the client. In mass tort settlements involving thousands of claimants, lien resolution is typically handled by specialized lien management vendors or in-house teams working in parallel with the settlement administration process to avoid disbursement delays. Failure to properly resolve liens can expose both the plaintiff and the law firm to repayment obligations and regulatory penalties, making it a critical component of mass tort case closing workflows.
