Intel · Mass Tort Glossary
Also known as: OR, exposure-outcome ratio
A statistical measure used in mass tort epidemiological and case-specific expert analysis to quantify the association between exposure to a defendant's product or substance and the incidence of a claimed injury, expressed as the ratio of the odds of disease in the exposed group versus the unexposed group. In plaintiff-side litigation strategy and advertising intelligence, odds ratios derived from published studies help attorneys and marketing teams assess the scientific strength of a tort theory before committing to large-scale lead generation spend. An odds ratio greater than 1.0 suggests a positive association between exposure and harm, and values that are both elevated and statistically significant tend to support causation arguments central to case qualification criteria.
