01Why we fund this

A great deal of the work we do for law firms involves people whose cancer was caused by a product — talc, Roundup, Zantac, contaminated water. We see, every day, what a diagnosis does to a family’s plans and finances. This award is a small, direct way to put some of that back: one student, one year, one less thing to cover.

02Who can apply

Employees of X Social Media LLC and their immediate families are not eligible. Previous recipients of the same award are not eligible. Full terms and conditions.

03The essay

Tell us about your experience with cancer and what you intend to do with your education.

Up to 1,000 words. Specific beats general: the moment, the person, the decision. You do not have to write about the hardest part, and you do not have to be finished with treatment to apply. Essays must be your own original work; we check.

04Apply

Everything is on this page — there is no separate portal, no account, and no document upload. Paste your essay into the box. Finalists are contacted for proof of enrollment and a brief physician’s confirmation of diagnosis before the award is made.

05Questions students ask

Do I have to be in remission?
No. The award is for anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis, at any stage or point in life, and is pursuing a degree.
Does a childhood diagnosis count?
Yes.
Will you ask for medical records?
Not with the application. Finalists are asked for a brief letter from a physician or treatment center confirming a diagnosis; no records, no details.
Is the award renewable?
No. It is a one-time $2,500 award, paid directly to the recipient’s school for tuition or fees.

Also open: the Law Student Scholarship. Financial-aid offices can find listing text for both awards on the scholarships page.
